The changing face of the High Street and the current policy and retail context is considered in detail in this report published by English Heritage (now known as Historic England). It considers what this might mean for town centre regeneration over the next few years.
Its case studies demonstrate what town centre regeneration can achieve through an innovative approach that makes the most of the local historic environment, even against a backdrop of testing economic times. At a time when people are increasingly looking for a leisure experience rather than simply a range of shops to visit, the report concludes that such an approach can help in creating a greater sense of ‘destination’ and potentially competitive advantage.
There are a number of key themes throughout the report about the continued evolution of the High Street and the consequent need for a new flexibility in helping to retain vibrancy and sense of purpose.
