Work is underway to determine future plans and priorities for revitalising Tadcaster town centre. Importantly the work has started with two surveys aimed at understanding the experiences and perceptions of businesses and town centre users.
Town centre surveys launched
A separate business survey and town centre users survey, are being carried out by the People & Places Partnership in early October, 2020. They were commissioned by Selby District Council in conjunction with Tadcaster Town Council and the Tadcaster Business Forum. The findings will be discussed widely with local community groups and businesses as part of deciding future priorities for the town centre.
COVID-19 recovery and beyond
The surveys and the follow-up planning and improvements, will consider the immediate needs in shaping post-COVID 19 recovery as well as seeking to address long-term issues and opportunities facing Tadcaster town centre. Intriguingly, the work will draw-on People & Places’ understanding from tracking national town centre trends and consumer confidence post-COVID-19. For example, it will compare local customer responses to COVID-19 against national and international benchmarks. It will also locally test the belief talked about nationally, that some businesses in smaller towns such as Tadcaster may be benefiting from an uplift in trade as residents work from home rather than commuting daily to nearby Leeds or York.
National approach with a local look
The work aimed at revitalising Tadcaster town centre applies a national approach in a way that captures local issues and engages stakeholders. The work uses the revitalising town centres toolkit created for the Local Government Association by the People & Places Partnership. A short video on understanding town trends in Tadcaster has been prepared to explain the process to local stakeholder groups in the town.
